I am also a music producer, audio engineer, and DJ. I create music under the name Bren Lock, teach music production in a variety of settings, and perform at events around the world.

Bren Lock

Between Bren Lock and my past artist projects, my music has been featured on SiriusXM, BBC Radio 1, and has gained upwards of 20 million streams online. My music is best described as “melodic techno”, which combines elements of 90’s rave music, contemporary house and electronica, and vocals which I write and perform myself. I’ve toured across North America, Europe, and Asia over the last few years.

You can listen to my music here.

Music Education

I’ve had extraordinary mentors for both my work in academia and music (my grandfather was a professor of music!) and I strive to be a resource to others who are learning to create their own music. I have given seminars on music production in New York, Indonesia, and at the University of Chicago. I also teach music production as an instructor with the Hyperbits Masterclass.

My approach to music production education focuses on songwriting and composition. There is an ever-increasing number of resources and technologies that make it easier and faster for new creators to make “professional sounding” music — I believe these tools allow producers to overlook the importance of the musical ideas underlying an electronic production. The result is a lot of music that sounds good, but lacks the substance and emotion of the music we love.

I seek to instill in my students a balance between the development of strong compositional ideas and the necessary technical expertise to make commercially-viable music. My students have completed international tours of their own and have accumulated over one billion streams of their music.
